How do I book a class?
Head to our Booking page to choose the class that’s right for you. If you’re new to sewing, you can start with a discounted taster class to see if the classes are right for you before committing to a longer booking.
You can then choose to book weekly, monthly or for a longer period, with greater discounts available the more classes you book. This gives you the flexibility to find a commitment that works for you while making the most of your sewing time.
What if I have accessibility needs?
Please let us know about any accessibility needs or adjustments you may require when booking, so we can make sure you feel comfortable and supported during the class. We’re happy to discuss your needs in advance and, where possible, adapt the class, workspace or teaching approach to help you get the most from your time with us. The Portland centre is accessible to wheelchair users. There are disabled toilets and double doors with no stairs or steps giving easy access.

Do I need to bring a sewing machine?
If you have a machine you like to use, or perhaps a new machine you’d like to get started with, please bring it along. We have a selection of four sewing machines and overlockers available for those who are just starting out or don’t have their own, so there’s no need to have a machine before you begin.

What skills will I learn?
The skills you learn will depend on your experience, interests and the project you’re working on. You’ll build practical sewing and dressmaking skills at your own pace, from understanding patterns and fabrics to cutting, sewing and finishing garments to a high standard.
You may learn pattern cutting, fabric preparation, garment construction, seams and finishes, darts, zips, buttons, hems and hand sewing, as well as building ongoing confidence with your sewing machine.
How much do classes cost and how do I pay?
There’s a full list of class costs available, including our staggered pricing for different booking options. Discounts are available when you book a larger block of classes, making it a great option if you know you’d like to sew regularly.
If you prefer a more flexible approach, we also offer weekly drop-in classes, which can be booked as and when you need them at a fixed cost.

How many sessions do I need to book?
You can book as little or as much as suits you - from one session a month to every session available that month. Booking a larger block of sessions also unlocks discounts, so the more you book, the more you save.
There’s no commitment to continue. Simply book month by month and choose the number of sessions that works for you.
Is there parking?
Yes, there is free parking on the road outside of the sewing studio, as well as a large free car park opposite the Portland Centre, directly behind the Co-op car park.

Where should I look for my fabric?

When choosing fabric as a beginner, start by exploring your local fabric shops, where you can see and feel the fabrics before buying. There are also lots of great fabric suppliers online, offering a much wider choice of colours, prints and fabric types.
If you’re buying online, we recommend ordering samples first so you can check the colour, weight, texture and drape before committing to your fabric.
What do I need to bring?
Bring Your Own Project
Please bring your sewing kit, along with your sewing project and all the fabric and haberdashery items that you’ll need to complete it, including your pattern and fabric. This might also include thread, zips, elastic, buttons, interfacing or any other specific materials required for your project.
For beginners’ classes, please bring your essential sewing kit. You don’t need to bring a project or fabric to your first class, I’ll guide you through what you need and get you started with the basics
Do the classes follow school term times?
No, the classes run every Friday throughout the year, with a two-week break over Christmas and a break during August. Occasionally, a class may not run if the room is reserved by the church, but we’ll always let you know in advance if there are any changes.
Is there any storage at the hall?
Unfortunately, there is no storage available at the hall, so you’ll need to bring your sewing kit and belongings with you each week. Draft, Drape & Make cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage to personal belongings, so please make sure you take everything with you when you leave after a class.
What if I miss a session?
No problem! If you miss a session, you’ll receive a credit to use within four months of the missed class, subject to availability.
Credits are available when you book a block of at least four sessions in one month and can be used to book another session at a later date.
